SALON

What are your hours of operation?
I operate by appointment only. I schedule appointments Mon-Fri from 6:00am to 6:00pm and on Saturdays from 5:00am to 12:00pm. I service non-extension/hair replacement clients on Mondays & Tuesdays only.

Do you take walk-in's?
Unfortunately I do not. Majority of the services I offer require a consultation, therefore walk-in's doesn't really apply.

I have a very important occasion coming up and I need my hair done outside of your normal hours of operation can you help me?
I truly value my off days/hours, but depending on the day, I may do your hair for an additional convenience fee. I will provide this service at my discretion.

How much is the convenience fee?
The convenience fee is currently $50.

Why do I have to pay a deposit?
Often with touring, classes, ect, my appointments can run as far as two weeks in advance. I feel each client deserves my undivided attention so I do not double book appointments. If you do not show for whatever reason, I have lost that slot for the day therefore, a deposit is required for all services over $100 to reserve your appointment

Where are you located?

We are now located in Lexington, KY. Click on contact to view detailed information. I also travel monthly to surrounding areas in kentucky as well as Ohio, Tennesse, and Georgia. Click here for more information about my travel dates.

I am not in your area,  Do you travel?
I am able to travel to your destination depending on the day and your local for an additional travel fee.

How much is the travel fee?
If you are in the lexington area (30 mile radius), I charge on a “mileage” bases.  If you are located in another state or outside of our radius, please call for pricing.

Do you service men?
Although I am not a barber, I do service men for hair replacement needs.

Can I bring my friends or family with me?
Space is limited. Please refrain from bringing your guests unless they too are being serviced.

Will I have to wait a while to get my hair done after my scheduled appointment time?
Nine times out of ten, I will be ready for you when you arrive at your scheduled appointment time. I always will try to contact you in advance whenever possible if I feel that I’ll be running more than 15 minutes behind schedule.

Before we begin our weaving & extension FAQ, I would like to clarify a few things about hair weaving, hair replacement, and extensions. Basically, they all mean the same thing.  These services are any form of hair adornment. A wig could technically be considered a form of hair extension but not commonly. It's just what the name implies; extending the hair.

Today, the term "hair extensions" does not generally include wigs or falls or toupees. Instead, it refers to attaching synthetic or human hair out of a bag to a person's own natural hair. The methods of attachment can vary tremendously. The intention is usually to achieve more LENGTH or DENSITY or both in a way that looks as natural and undetectable as possible.

Now what may seem frustrating to you; as it is to me, is the terminology used in today’s salons.  Everyone wants to brand their own service/hair and ultimately it’s just confusing to the client.  If you read my bio you know education is important to me.  I take classes every month because every month a new system is created.  I once took a class on the Micro Lace Extension technique. The information about the class was generalized   “no humps, no bumps, ect”.  15 minutes into the class I learned it was nothing other than a sew-in using a net.  I won’t even go into how much I spent for the class, but you get the jest.

Despite the terms and how they are used, I try to use these terms how they are most commonly used by YOU, the client.  I will not advertise a service as  “Micro Lace Extensions” and have you believe it’s a new hot method when all it is, is a net sew in. On our website you will find information and see pictures that demonstrate hair weaves, extensions, & hair replacement "in action".  If at any time you are still unsure, just email us and we will clarify!

WEAVE SERVICES

What type of hair do you recommend for extensions?
We can provide hair products for any type of weave, extension, or hair replacement procedure we offer with the exception of the Glue-free Quickweave. This hair we supply is top of the line, Grade-A Remy hair and Virgin Indian Remy hair and should not be used for bonding procedures.

What is the S.T. Glue-Free Quickweave ?
WARNING: According to the state board of Cosmetology and Dermatology, Quickweaves when created with gel/spritz and a nylon stocking cap over time cause a fungus that creates permanent hair loss /alopecia. A quickweave, also known as bond-in, glue-in, stocking cap quickweave, hard wrap, ect. Is a process where all your natural hair is molded creating a flat base, a stocking cap is used to cover that base in an effort to protect your hair and wefts of hair is then glued onto that base.  Unfortunately this method doesn't protect your hair from glue. There is also a technique called the removable stocking cap quickweave, where the hair is covered with paper & a stocking cap.  This method is considered a custom made wig since it can be taken on and off. The difference between a regular quickweave and my glue-free quickweave is the protection level. Yes I still use glue, but I use a special technique that protects your natural hair 100% from bonding glue and eliminates the use for gel/spritz molds, stocking caps, mummy wraps and paper method. GUARANTEED! You have to see it to believe it!

What is the S.T. Net Method?
The Net Method is a sew-in weave with a net.  I prefer to use nets when installing a sew-in because it allows for a flatter weave.  It also provides a base to stitch onto where sufficient hair is absent.  This is great for those suffering from hair loss.
How many packs of hair do I need for a sew-in or bond in?
This depends on how full/long you want your weave & which technique your requesting. General rule, if you are purchasing your own hair, two packs will be sufficient.  Majority of the time, I use one pack or a pack and a half.  If you are purchasing your hair from a vendor that measures hair in ounces, you will need 4 to 6 ounces for a natural looking weave and 8 ounces for a full glamorous weave.

What is the S. T. InvisaWefts?
InvisaWefts is a brand of Contagious Hair and is also known as skin wefts, Invisible wefts, seamless skin wefts, pu wefts, ect.  These wefts are a very small thin-poly base; the hair is injected into the base for a very natural look. This is the same material and technique used on our thin skin wigs. This allows for it to look like it is growing out of your scalp.

How many packs do I need for the InvisaWeft method?
This also depends on how full/long you want your weave. Color and hair density of your natural hair also plays an important part.  Depending on the method/company we choose, you will need anywhere from 1-2 packs for a full head install.

What makes Skin wefts different than any other method?
Hair is not sewn, braided, or clipped in.  The seamless weft is attached laying the seamless skin weft flat on a hair part and securing it with a medical grade tape. This allows for a natural looking, flat hair extension application that looks like it is growing out of your scalp.  The hair is reusable and one install can last up to 3 months.

What is the S. T. Flat Method?
This extension term (as well as others) is also interchangeable.  I now see it being advertised as the InvisaWeft method above but this method is actually a revised version of The Malaysian Method.  The Malaysian method involves the formation of a single thread at your scalp to form the base. Rows of wefts are then attached/sewn evenly onto the base. I, as well as others have realized that the original method became harsh on the hair. The Flat Method uses links to form a base instead of thread which is less evasive on the hair. One good thing about this technique is that it does not use any braids, glue or resin. In addition, pressure on the scalp is evenly distributed so there is full integration between your hair and the weave.

Tell me about Daily activity with these weave services.
With every weaving, extension, hair replacement method there are certain restrictions.  I will go into detail during your consult and after the service is complete, but in general you can go about your normal daily activities with a few exceptions.  Since my Glue-Free Quickweave is a temporary styling option (up to 4 weeks) and it is water soluble, you of course should not shampoo your hair until you are ready for take down.  This does not include exercising because the protection forms a barrier between your natural hair and the weave.  Therefore, if you perspire or have an oily scalp, it will not jeopardize the longevity of the weave.

With the Net Weave and InvisaWefts, you can shampoo, exercise, and go about your daily routine without interruption.  I don’t recommend heavy product use with any weave as it just weighs it down and looks unnatural but if you must use oil, use it sparingly with InvisaWefts and stay as far away from the point of attachment if possible.  Since the bond for InvisaWefts is oil soluble, it will shorten the life span of the weave.

Do I have to purchase the weave hair through you?
Of course not.  If you have a particular brand or vendor you are comfortable with, then that is fine.  Keep in mind I cannot guarantee the longevity of your service with hair purchased from another vendor.

What is Contagious Hair?

Contagious Hair is exclusive lines of Virgin Indian Remy, Virgin Chinese Remy, Art Remy Yaky, ect. that we carry.  We also carry known companies such as Cinderella hair, Flhair, Lord & Cliff, Indique hair, ect.
How long does my hair need to be in order to get a weave?
I prefer working with lengths longer than 3 inches; however this is always not the case.  This will be determined during your consult.
Is there anything that I should do to my hair prior to my weave appointment?
If possible, you can shampoo and blow-dry your hair. Please avoid using any products. I will add a moisturizer to your hair depending on your service.

How long will it take to get my weave done?
You can expect to be in the chair for about 2-3 hours. However, this timeframe does vary from client to client.

I want a sewn-in weave, but I have natural hair. Do I have to get a relaxer?
A relaxer is certainly not required for a weave. However, I recommend a full-head weave with closure (all of the hair braided up) if you do not feel comfortable maintaining the top area of your hair between salon visits.
Why is a full sew-in with closure mean?
A full sew-in with closure means that all of your natural hair is braided into a secure foundation and not left out for blending. I can custom close your weave (stitch until there is no opening) or you can purchase a closure piece.  I prefer working with a closure piece because it allows for the most flattest, natural looking weave possible.
Does my hair need to be in perfect condition to get a weave?
Depending on the case, I will do a weave on damaged hair for the sole purpose of protecting the hair. The goal will be to achieve healthier hair - not just cover up the problem. After examining your hair, I will come up with a healthy hair plan for you.

Do you care for damaged hair?
Of course! That is the focus of my business. I truly enjoy the challenge of whipping damaged hair back into shape. I care for the natural hair while installing protective styles (weaves). Please note that it is not necessary for someone to wear weaves to grow their hair out though.

Are there any restrictions when getting weaves?

1) I will not do a sew-in on freshly relaxed hair. The hair is at a weakened state after it is freshly relaxed so it is not the greatest idea to add cornrows, thread, and wefts at that time. A partial weave is okay if you must have a weave installed. I understand that a client may not want to go without a weave because it has become a part of their life but hair care is more important in my opinion.

2) I will not do weaves or fusion on hair that is excessively shedding. It is important to try to get to the bottom of why your hair is shedding. Sometimes excessive shedding can be a caused from an underlying condition that may need to be diagnosed by your doctor. Masking the problem does not stop the shedding.

3) I personally will not install a weave on hair shorter than 3 inches. The foundation may not hold up for the sewn-in weave if the hair is too short. Plus, I cannot grip short hair very well. I also don't want you to waste money on something that may not hold up for the 6-8 weeks or so.

What is the recommended length of time to wear my weave?
I recommend that you wear your weave no longer than 6 to 8 weeks. The weave itself will hold up much longer, but it’s really about your hair underneath.  I suggest you come in for regular maintenance visits every 4 weeks for checkups and /or re-tightening.

What could happen if I leave my weave in longer than the recommended time?
Your hair underneath could begin to get extremely matted/tangled (dred up), which can result in hair loss.

Do you charge to take out my weave?
There is a fee for takedown. If I am removing an install that I performed, I charge a flat fee and that fee is discounted if your getting it re-installed. However, if you leave your install in longer than the recommended time frame, you will be charged by the hour. This is because the longer you wear your install, the thread becomes less visible, your braids become matted and tangled, and I have to take extra care in the removal which means more time.

If I am removing an install that I DID NOT perform, I charge per hour and that fee is not discounted. I strongly suggest you return to the stylist that performed your install for take down. Since I am not familiar with their work, it may take me longer to ensure the safety of your hair wich can become costly.

What should I put on my hair underneath the sew-in?
My favorite moisturizer to use underneath a weave is S curl, ORS olive oil, or Lisa Akbari's Moisture Plus.

How often should I shampoo my weave?
Once per week or once every two weeks is fine. However, your shampooing needs may vary.

Is there a particular shampoo that you recommend for the weave?
My favorite shampoo and conditioner for weaves and natural hair is Kenra Moisturizing shampoo & conditioner.  Other favorite lines are DHD H20 shampoo and Moisture conditioner. (www.dhdbynatlewis.com), Design Essentials, and KeraCare.  I don’t use beauty supply store brand products but my clients suggest Crème of Nature, ORS, Dove moisture line and Silicon mix.  Whatever brand you choose, your focus should be on the ingredients.  Choose a sulfate-free shampoo as sulfates are harsh on the hair.

Is there an easy method to use to shampoo my weave?
It is easy to shampoo your weave while in the shower. Keep the hair going straight back; that will help minimize or even eliminate tangling. I recommend using an applicator bottle to mix shampoo and water. Shake then squirt the shampoo suds in between the tracks. You can do the same with the conditioner. Do Not vigorously massage your hair; instead, stroke your hair from front to back. Rinse VERY thoroughly.

EXTENSION SERVICES

What kind of hair do you use for fusion?
This depends on which system we choose and your hair texture.  We use brands such as Cinderella Hair, Lord & Cliff, Flhair, Ultratress, Mega Hair, ect.  These company brands consist of Indian Remy hair, Yaki hair, European hair, Russian hair, Indonesian hair, and come in a variety of curl patterns.

What are the differences between all those systems?
Remember when I spoke about interchangeable terms & branding?  Well this will mostly apply here.  Some terms you may be familiar with are fusion, regular fusion, hot fusion, Individual Strands, secret strands, Micro links, loop fusion, flat strands, flash point, micro rings, and the list goes on and on. As previously stated, we will go into depth about extensions during your consult but generally the above methods and the extension services I offer fall into one of two categories:

Hot Fusion  or   Cold Fusion

Hot Fusion is your regular fusion and attached by heating up either a keratin or protein based solution to mold individual strands to your natural hair.  The hair I use comes pre-tipped with this solution for easier and damage free application.

Cold Fusion is the same as Hot Fusion with the exception of attachment. Cold Fusion is usually attached using small links. This system is far less damaging and last longer than Hot Fusion but both depend on proper installation and how well you care for you hair.

How long does this process take?
The time depends on the length and style desired.  You can plan to be in the salon from 2-6 hours.

How long does fusion last?
Regular fusion can last 3 to 4 months, with cold fusion/flashpoint, ect can last 6 months or longer. I strongly recommend you read & follow your maintenance packet carefully. It will list all the recommended products and tools to care for your extensions at home as well as regular maintenance check up's.

Will fusion cause damage to my hair?
With proper application, proper care while wearing the fusion, and proper removal, the fusion method should not cause damage. I do not recommend applying fusion to weak/damaged hair.

Do you charge to take out my fusion?
There is a fee for takedown. If I am removing an install that I performed, I charge on a per hour basis and if you have followed the at home care listed in your maintenance packet, take down can be easily done within 1 to 2 hours for a full head and less for partials. The fee is discounted if you are getting it re-installed.

If I am removing an install that I DID NOT perform, I still charge per hour however, the fee is NOT discounted. I strongly suggest you return to the stylist that performed your install for take down.

Can I use the fusion method to grow my hair out?
You can, but I do not feel that this is the absolute best way. Please be mindful that you will need to take extra care of your hair that is in between the fusion bonds. Minimize the use of hot curlers. Since your natural hair is intertwined with the fusion hair, anything you do to the fusion hair affect your natural hair.

Are there any restrictions when getting weaves or fusion/extensions?

1) I will not install fusions on freshly relaxed hair. The hair needs to be at least 1 week post relaxed.

2) I prefer to work with hair that is at least 3 inches long. However, this may not always be the case for fusion since we are more concerned with coverage. This will be determined during the consultation.

3)I will not install fusion on damage/stressed hair for obvious reasons.

Can you match my hair?
The hair extentions bonds are available in variety of classic colors, from blondes, reds, and brunette tones to black including numerous textures.

How do I manage my hair extensions once I get them?
You will get a maintenance kit to take home will all the recommended products and tools as well as a maintenance sheet. Click here to view

Can I swim and do normal activities?
Yes, once the application is completed, you will receive a home care maintenance sheet so you will know the best way to care for your extensions.

Can my hair be colored at the same time?
It is recommended that hair be colored to your desire at the time of your consult for proper matching. Touch ups should be performed up a minimum of 48 hours prior to application of extensions.

Can hair extensions be styled with heat rollers, curling iron, or a round brush?
Yes, if they are kept at an adequate distance from the bonds.

How much do hair extensions cost?
It depends on what your goal is. It will cost from $500 to $2000 and in different cases if you only want few highlights or just some fun colors it will be charged per bond on the hair.

How can I book an appointment with Shamis?
Simply give us a call or use our online scheduling system located on the appointments page.

LACE WIG SERVICES

What is this lace front wig everyone is talking about?
Lace front wigs, full lace wigs, and lace frontals are the hottest trend out among extension/weave wearers. It is a wig made with thin, sturdy lace material. Individual strands of hair are ventilated to the base. This design creates a realistic looking hairline. The lace is trimmed to match the hairline and shape of your head and when properly attached, the hairline is so realistic looking it is virtually undetectable and the hair appears as if it is growing directly from your scalp.

How do I get one?
You can purchase a Contagious Lace Unit on Contagious Hair.com. We have custom units that are moderately priced starting at $299. You can set up a Lace Unit consult and your first install is free with purchase. However, there are several vendors online to choose from. My best advice is to do your due diligence and research the vendor to the best of your ability. I have had several clients that have lost money on ebay and with other vendors either to not receive what they requested or received nothing at all. Unlike some resellers, we are hands-on with our units. We have master ventilators with more than 30 years of experience constructing lace wigs. To be more specific, our ventilators are the original cranial hair prosthesis (lace wig) constructors for Hair Club for Men - remember them?

Does the wig last 2 years or more?
This is true.... to an extent. You must properly take care of the unit and wear it only for a few days a month to see this longevity. Although this sounds good to you as a consumer, and it helps put money into your sellers pockets, it just isn't that simple. The truth is with only one unit and daily wear, the wig will last but may need repairs after 6 months or so. This is true even for "vet" lace front wearers.

How do I put it on & take it off?
Don't worry, we take care of all that for you. During your application and or removal, you are in front of the mirror the entire time and we guide you along as we attach your unit. We have web based instruction online at Contagious Hair.com

How long will it stay on?
This is basically a personal preference and your daily activities, skin/hair behavior, and allergens if any are dependant on which bond we use. There are several bonds on the market from soft bonds that will last a few days to a hard bond that will last a few weeks. Please remember that it is trial and error to determine which method of application is right for you.
